Things I Learned from Going to Texas

So, as we all know, it's obligatory to go to the SXSW conference in Texas. So I went. And GOOD it was too. Really, really, F-Bombing good. Although it had a rather frustrating end to it, I had an absolutely amazing time, made a lot of new friends, and I've returned to the UK, with a severe lack of sleep and a failing liver, with a million ideas for conferences, my business, HTML Dog and web design in general.

It's also obligatory to blog about SXSW, so here's my contribution, a list of some of the things I've learned from my SXSW experience:

Not everyone in Austin is like a member of the family in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
I suspected Zeldman, Clark and Bowman would be good speakers, but now I know just how good they are, I'm very excited about them coming over to London for @media 2005.
Messrs Budd & Keith surprised the hell out of me (not that I expected them to be crap, as Andy suggested!) - they, and their presentation were ~~awesome~~really bloody good. Another positive sign for @media 2005.
The Dog Blog needs to be more personal. I should, actually, blog about babies.
I have bad posture.
Some would argue I've had an unhealthy level of excitement in the web for some time. Well put me in a hospital for the severely excited. The concentration of excitement about the current state of the web and the future of the web in my blood has increased ten-fold.
The web world has a disproportionate amount of nice people in it.
My book is going to be damned good. Don't expect it this month, though.
Apples are the only fruit.
You don't need to take photos at SXSW because everyone else will take thousands. If you took every photo taken at the conference, you could make a smooth, real-time, 3D movie of the whole event.
Washington is not in a convenient location.
Jeffrey Veen is twice the height of Jeffrey Zeldman.
I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance.

No Book Just Yet

I've found it marginally amusing to see how the publication date of my book, "XHTML & CSS: A Web Standards Approach," is shown as different on different Amazon sites and is frequently changing. March this year was a common one for a while. Amazon.com now says December 2006! Just to set it straight (or not, really), the book won't be published this month – it's still being worked on. It had better be out a bit before 2006 (and especially December 2006) though! In reality, there's no fixed date.
